Basics of Enhanced Recovery

Why is this beneficial to patients?

Initiating this protocol helps to optimize the patient’s health before surgery Giving the patient extra nutrition prior to surgery prevents the patient from being completely NPO after midnight the night before surgery Helps reduce the patient’s risk of infection

What is expected after surgery?

  • Early Ambulation
    • Approximately 2 hours after surgery:
    • Patient is up and walking
  • Diet
    • 1 hour after surgery:
      • Patient begins clear liquids
    • Diet will be advanced as tolerated
  • Less Pain Meds
    • Goal
      • To use less narcotics
  • Early Discharge
    • We want patient outcomes to be primitive and to have the patient back home as soon as possible
